Horticultural Information

Preferred Conditions: It prefers good moist summer conditions, though can tolerate dry and compacted soil.

Tolerant of heavy pruning, dry conditions, though not for prolonged periods. Not tolerant of lopping, as this results in fungal decay becoming established.

High tolerance to waterlogged soils and a wide range of pH.

Useful Life Expectancy (ULE): Medium, 70-80 years

Significance: Unusual type of tree as a street tree; attractive pale coloured bark on trunk and stems, contrasting against the dark green foliage.

Flowering Characteristics: Catkins, in early summer; can be difficult to appreciate amongst the leaves.

Features: Foliage is Ovate shaped leaves 8-14cm long & 6-9cm wide, dark green on upper surface and pale green to yellow un undersurface; smooth on both side of leaves. Petioles (leaf sems) are long, 4-6cm with a ridge in middle of upper surface.

Points of Interest:  Not known to sucker, unless surface roots are impacted.

Additional Notes

Wood is soft and prone to fungal decay when exposed to large pruning cuts or severe lopping.
